I’m an unabashed social media purist.
Always have been, from the early days of Twitter in 2007-12 when connection, conversation and community really meant something.
And while I still love social media, it’s certainly not as pure and authentic as it used to be, not with the proliferation of one-way brand marketers, spammers, get-rich-quick merchants, and those on both the left and right sides of politics with an agenda to push.
But it’s great to see it’s not all doom and gloom on ‘the socials’.
Some 24 hours ago I posted the image of two book cover designs (below) on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, asking people what their preference was – cover ‘A’ or ‘B’.
The response has been crazy (good)!
At time of writing, I had over 300 responses on LinkedIn, about 130 on Facebook, and I haven’t gotten around to counting the tweets.
The post on LinkedIn alone has generated in excess of 22,000 views … and still counting!
UPDATE: This post has since generated 65,500+ views and nearly 580 comments.
This is what social media has always been about.
Pure interaction. Engagement. Conversation. Helping a brother out.
Sure, it helps that I have built up a decent-sized community of friends and connections (Facebook and LinkedIn) and followers (Twitter) over the journey, but hey, that just reinforces one of social media’s truisms, and that is you need to build your community before you need it. That means showing up and adding value without the expectation of getting anything in return again and again … and again.
Anyway, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share this story while experiencing the power of social media in full flight.
With the bad rap social gets these days – some of it deserved, some not so much – it’s great to be able to bring you this example in real time.
